Yas Hotel
August
The Yas Hotel is located within the Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. It is the first new hotel in the world to be built over an F1 race circuit.
The Hotel, designed by New York based Asymptote Architecture consists of two twelve story hotel towers, one set within the race circuit and another placed in the Marina itself, linked together by a monocoque steel and glass bridge and Grid Shell structure that both cross above and over the Yas Marina Circuit F1 race track.
Of architectural and engineering significance is the main feature of the hotelʼs design: a 217-meter expanse of sweeping, curvilinear glass and steel covering known as the Grid Shell: it features an LED lighting system incorporating video feeds that are transmitted over the 5,389 pivoting diamond-shaped color changing LED panes. This Grid-Shell component is a key aspect of the overall architectural design and significance of the project by producing an atmospheric-like veil visible from miles away.

Shiekh Zayed Mosque
Feb
The majestic Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is one of the most important architectural treasures of contemporary UAE society - and one of the most beautiful in the world - initiated no less by the late president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who is fondly thought of as the father of UAE.
The Mosque’s initial architectural design was Moroccan, but it evolved to include many global features, including exterior walls that are of traditional Turkish design. Natural materials were chosen for its design and construction, which include marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics.
The Mosque features 80 domes all decorated with white marble. The Mosque has 1,096 columns in its exterior and 96 columns in the main prayer hall which are embedded with more than 20,000 handmade marble panels encrusted with semi-precious stones, including lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone shell and mother of pearl. Furthermore, beautiful minarets standing 107 metres are built on the four corners of the Mosque.
Artificial lakes, totaling 7,874 square metres and laden with dark tiles, surround the Mosque, whilst coloured floral marble and mosaics pave the 17,000 square metre courtyard. The main prayer hall also features the world’s largest hand-woven Persian carpet (7,119 square metres).
The Mosque can accommodate up to 40,960 worshippers from its prayer halls and courtyard.

The Rub’ al Khali
Jan
The Rub’ al Khali (translates as Empty Quarter in English), is one of the largest sand deserts in the world. The desert is 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long, and 500 kilometres (310 mi) wide, and is neither inhabited nor traversed by the Bedouins. The first documented journeys by Westerners were made by Bertram Thomas in 1931 and St. John Philby in 1932. Between 1946 and 1950 Wilfred Thesiger crossed the area several times and mapped large parts.
Summer temperatures of nearly 55 °C (131 °F) and dunes over 330 metres (1,100 ft) make Rub' al Kali one of the most forbidding environments on Earth. Fauna includes arachnids and rodents while plants live throughout the Empty Quarter. As an ecoregion, it falls within the Arabian Desert and East Saharo-Arabian xeric shrublands.

Al Ain
Dec
Al Ain (al-ʿayn, literally The Spring), also known as the Garden City due to its
greenery, is the second largest city in the Abu Dhabi Emirate and the fourth largest city in
the United Arab Emirates. With a population of 374,000[1] (2009), it is located
approximately 160km east of the capital Abu Dhabi and about 120km south of Dubai. Al
Ain is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the
United Arab Emirates, and it has the country's highest number of Emirati nationals.
Al Ain is located in Abu Dhabi, inland on the border with Oman. The freeways connecting
Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai form a geographic triangle in the center of the country, each
city being roughly 130 kilometers from the other two.
Historically the area was known as Tawam, Al Buraimi oasis and Al Ain, which means "the
water spring". Al Ain has been continuously inhabited for more than four thousand years
and is considered central to the cultural heritage of the country. It is the birthplace of
Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates. Today,
the name Buraimi refers to the Omani town whose urban area merges with that of Al Ain.
Until late in 2006, Al Ain and Buraimi enjoyed an open border and functioned as a unit.
Then on September 14 of that year, the UAE government closed the open border and
required all individuals to clear immigration whether entering or leaving the UAE. While
Persian Gulf nationals may cross the border at the main crossing, expats must cross at
either the Hili or "Intercontinental" border crossings. The area's numerous underground
water springs explain its attractiveness for settlement. Traces remain of its traditional
past, including camel racing and camel breeding. The ancient falaj system of irrigation is
still in use in some areas; this system distributes underground water by a network of
tunnels which emerge eventually into open channels whose flow can be directed and
regulated.
